3. The secret to activating your passive listeners
"The first thing podcasters have to realize is that 90% of their audience, they're just passive listeners. They're happy just listening on a walk in their car, washing the dishes or whatever. These are the people you need to activate.”
Pat Cheung is the founder of Pod Inbox, a company that helps podcasters engage with their fans. He is also a serial entrepreneur and user experience designer.
This is Pat Cheung's story...
“I've been listening to podcasts for over 12 years. I've always wanted to engage with these people I was listening to day after day or week after week and I didn't really have a way to do it.
So about a year ago, after my previous company got acquired, I needed to find what the next thing would be. As a podcast fan, the podcasting community was who I wanted to help. I decided to focus on the problem of audience engagement, without having to rely on social media.
Many podcasters were having to do a lot of heavy lifting to build a community and spend lots of time nurturing that community. And even with their best efforts, they were abandoning their Facebook groups or Discord Channels because it just takes so much energy to kind of foster that community.
So I thought, “There's got to be a middle ground where you're engaging your fans and keeping them super excited about what is coming up on your podcast. Coming from a user experience and product design background, I decided to create a product that helps podcasters create raving fans.
That’s how Pod Inbox was born.”
